Many studies have shown that using a condom during sex decreases your risk of getting vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis. This is because the skin to skin contact can introduce new bacteria into your vagina and, on top of that, semen can change the vaginal pH. Your vagina has its own bacterial ecosystem maintained by a certain pH, so when the pH gets thrown off certain bacteria grows disproportionately which results in vaginal infections like BV and yeast.
